On 13 June, 2010, I was privileged to play the newest and, I believe, the best of luthier Huang’s many fine violins, a remarkable instrument with a most beautiful sound. Overall, it is rich and full yet with a sweetness and clarity that floats through the air, capable of expressing all emotions, haunting and lovely when soft, yet fully capable of the most powerful and demanding ffff passages. There is a harmonious balance across the full range, yet each string has its own unique and satisfying voice.
I grew up listening to Hifeitz recordings, assuming that all violins should sound like his Guameri del Gesu, and that sound is what I was reminded of while listening to this beautiful instrument. It has commanding power balanced with delicate beauty. Though it may improve even more as it ages to reach its full potential, this violin already reminds me of that rich Hifeitz sound… truly a remarkable instrument.

DAVID McBride Amos July 1,2010
